Dear Sandra, please introduce yourself: I am the 2nd Chairman of Digital Media Women e.V., represented by nine quarters nationwide. In March 2020 I started my degree in Business Informatics. I am a technical product owner and founder of the online marketplace “Kitchennerds”. I am also a big fan of initiatives like moinworld, the PyLadies and others, which empower women for IT, present possibilities and support women in learning programming.
Here are some of the biggest changes since the start of our mentoring program Since the launch of our mentoring program at the beginning of this year, a lot of things have changed. During the past seven months, 17 mentors and mentees have found each other with the help of our mentoring program. Many of you are already familiar with it: Bundeswettbewerb Informatik. Young adults up to the age of 21 are encouraged to develop an interest in information technology and programming, as well as to discover hidden talents. Unfortunately, as it is usually the case - the percentage of males in the technological field is much higher than that of women. We intend to change this ratio. We believe, the earlier we start to encourage girls, the greater the chances of success.
Berenike (15 years old) and Henriette (13 years old) are participants in our Python Advanced Programming Course, which is currently held online. They both attend a science gymnasium in Munich. We conducted an interview with them about their experiences with programming and asked them what it is like to learn something new together with other (older) women. You have participated in our Python beginner course and are currently attending the online Python advanced course.
In early June 2019 I was planning a three months trip to Germany from Tanzania (East Africa) The purpose of my visit was to get to know the tech and innovation ecosystem in Europe, but also to network and more importantly raise funding for the startup I founded - Mobile afya. Prior to my trip I was already invited to a number of events and conferences, but I still knew I would have some spare time.
The moinworld Summer Camp Every year we at moinworld e.V. organize our summer camp for female students and want to tell you about this year’s Corona Digital version. The goal of moinworld e.V. is to create a developer community where women and girls have the same opportunities to help shape the digital future as men. We achieve this by strengthening women: Through IT education and by supporting a helpful network.
Crises make us fall back into old role models (1). The Corona crisis is no exception - numerous articles in the media have dealt with this topic over the past weeks (2). Due to the additional burden of household and educational work of women alongside working from home, experts fear a regression of equal rights. In hospitals, supermarkets or kindergartens, women, some of whom are underpaid, do a large part of the work and are thus exposed to an increased risk of infection.
moinworld’s virtual event series - in times of social distancing this time presenting Airbus On June 4th, we met the community online again. This time, we were looking forward to meeting the team of Airbus to get insights into how the company and especially the IT department was managing during the crisis. We had two talks planned for the evening - one by Lenneke Alves-Bakker who is Head of Change and Adoption Digital Workplace and one by Camille Levesque, Marketing Manager at the Airbus Protospace Hamburg.
