Meet our mentors - Natascha

“what I haven’t seen until now (at least not very often) are mentoring-programs for young women. I wanted to be part of that process. „Be the change you want to see in the world“, right?”

Who are you? What do we need to know about you?

Wow, what a difficult question. You always think you know the answer and then someone puts this question right in front of you ;) I would say, I’m an all-rounder, in my private life as well as in my professional life. I’m interested in so many different things, but I also get bored very easily, if things need too much time to go forward. So, I cook fast, I read fast, I learn fast and I work fast, because there is always something new you can discover and learn about. I lived abroad a few times, because adventures and living abroad are as well things that make you learn fast. That’s the same in business, I always want to learn fast, so I can do more stuff, be helpful and understand the project on a holistic level. When I started as a communications expert in a small Scrum Team, I educated myself on topics as UX, Design Thinking, Lean Innovation and so on, because I wanted to understand the project from every angle. Now I’m an Agile Coach, that’s how things can go. And I’m sure I won’t stop, I just keep learning new stuff.

Why did you join our program? What makes it special?

I was always very interested in Maths and Physics even though I was never very good at it. At that time nobody really supported girls to work for it or make it more accessible for them. People always suggested I should do something with literature and I just believed it and didn’t give the work needed to be better at maths or physics. I’m pretty sure that I would have studied something else, if I had been encouraged and supported to go for STEM topics. In the last years many initiatives were build to help bring girls and women into the STEM-world, help bring the numbers up on female programmers and developers, but it’s still not enough (especially not in Germany) and what I haven’t seen until now (at least not very often) are mentoring-programs for young women. I wanted to be part of that process. „Be the change you want to see in the world“, right?

What are the challenges of being a mentor?

To accept that not everything you say or suggest will fall on fruitful ground. You have to adapt to the pace of the mentee and contain yourself, when you think you know what the next step has to be, because it’s not about you. You can just be there and be available, the rest lays in the hands of the mentee.

What do you love most about being a mentor?

What I love most about being a mentor is to learn how useful and valuable your knowledge and experience can be for someone else, in a way that you can use it for the good thing and not just for a job. Especially in these chaotic times, I needed to do something positive, something that benefited someone else. And above all you learn how fast you can make a real connection with a person you didn’t know before, because the connection had to be built faster than normally because otherwise the work wouldn’t go well in the set time.
