On 30.01, the moinworld community had an extraordinary moment during the New Year’s kick-off at Google: the launch of our new mentoring program. With the motto “changing lives by learning from each other”, the initiative has two goals. First is to make a positive impact on the life of the participants and the second to advance women’s careers in the field of technology.
Starting a career in IT when you are not a techie
After joing our programming classes students have the option to work on a small project together with other former moinworld programming class students and a mentor will offer self-help during the project. Working on your own projects, making your own mistakes is an important part of the process but it helps to get hints what to do when you are stuck.
Group tech mentoring can also be combined with the 1:1 mentoring track, focused on personal development.
Advancing your personal development
The general 1:1 mentoring track offers the opportunity to a moinworld community member to be paired with an experienced mentor that will help the mentee to reflect on how to achieve their goals. Combined with that, we offer an easy to follow framework made of 6 guidelines to facilitate the conversation throughout the sessions.
What does it take to join as a mentor or mentee?
Having a learning mindset and the openness to give and receive feedback are the most important things. Another crucial aspect is related to time commitment. Please check below for further criteria.
For mentors
For group code mentoring:
- You should be a software developer.
- Time commitment: at least 1 hour per week for at least 1 month.
- Passionate about helping people.
For 1:1 general mentoring / personal development
- Working experience: 3 years at IT-related field/industry.
- Time commitment: at least 1 hour per month for 6 months.
- Passionate about helping people.
For mentees
